Great Eastern DNS Educational Qualification
To apply for Great Eastern DNS, candidates must meet the eligibility requirements prescribed by IMU and DGS. For DNS, the current requirement is:
- 60% average in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM)
- 50% marks in English in Class 10 or Class 12
- 5% relaxation in PCM marks for SC/ST candidates, while the English requirement remains unchanged
GEIMS also specifies that candidates who have completed their education through NIOS, distance learning, or open university are not eligible. Candidates who have taken improvement, compartment, or supplementary examinations must have appeared through the same examination board.
So, don’t check only your overall Class 12 percentage. Your PCM average, English marks, and mode of education all matter when checking Great Eastern DNS eligibility.
Can NIOS Students Apply for Great Eastern DNS?
This is one area where Great Eastern has given a very clear answer. Under current GEIMS conditions, candidates who have completed NIOS, distance learning, open university, or equivalent routes are not eligible for admission.
If you have completed your schooling through one of these routes, check the GEIMS rule before applying. It is much better to know about the restriction at the beginning than after completing the application process.
What If You Have Taken an Improvement or Compartment Examination?
Another condition that can easily be overlooked concerns students who have appeared for an improvement, compartment, or supplementary examination.
GEIMS specifies that candidates who have taken such an examination must have done so through the same examination board. Changing the board for the same examination can make the candidate ineligible under the institute’s admission conditions.
Great Eastern DNS Age Limit
Age is another important part of Great Eastern DNS eligibility. GEIMS follows the applicable DGS and IMU guidelines for its DNS program. The current IMU DNS eligibility information specifies the following maximum age limits:
- Male: 25 years for General, 28 years for OBC-NCL, and 30 years for SC/ST
- Female: 27 years for General, 30 years for OBC-NCL, and 32 years for SC/ST

Medical Fitness for Great Eastern DNS
Medical fitness is an essential part of Great Eastern DNS eligibility. Candidates must be physically fit for sea service according to the applicable STCW 2010 and merchant shipping medical requirements.
GEIMS requires shortlisted candidates to undergo their medical examination only through the company-appointed DGS-approved doctor. The selection process does not accept medical reports obtained elsewhere. Candidates who want to check their fitness beforehand can consult a DGS-approved doctor at their own expense.
Eyesight Requirements for Great Eastern DNS
Eyesight is particularly important for DNS candidates. Under the current IMU medical requirements, candidates must have good binocular vision and normal color vision. The prescribed unaided distance vision is 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other eye. Color vision is tested using the Ishihara Test Chart.
Candidates must also satisfy the other applicable eye and medical fitness requirements prescribed under the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules.
Is a passport mandatory for Great Eastern DNS?
Yes. GEIMS clearly states that a valid passport is mandatory for admission. Candidates without a valid passport during the admission process will not be selected. The institute advises candidates without one to apply for a Tatkaal passport and recommends having the surname included on the passport.
Note: IMU also strongly recommends that candidates applying for marine programs have a passport and ensure that the name matches their Class 10 certificate.

Is IMU-CET required for Great Eastern DNS?
Yes. IMU-CET is required for admission to DNS at affiliated institutes such as GEIMS. The current IMU 2026–27 Prospectus states that candidates seeking admission to affiliated institutes must first qualify for IMU-CET 2026, after which the institute’s admission procedure is followed.
