DNS Course Eligibility Criteria
The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is one of the most common entry courses among those who seek a career in the deck department of the Merchant Navy. This course focuses on navigation, seamanship, ship handling, and other competencies needed for a future deck officer.
As per the 2026-27 admission cycle, as stated in the official prospectus of IMU, the academic percentage, age, medical fitness, and the admission requirements for DNS at IMU have been specified by IMU. Further, IMU also states that the DNS admission process takes place through IMU-CET. (IMU)
It should be ensured that all eligibility criteria are fulfilled before applying for the course, as fulfilling only the academic percentage criteria does not qualify the candidate for admission.

Educational Qualification for DNS
The basic academic requirement is 10+2 or an equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as the required subjects.
Candidates must have:
- Passed Class 12/equivalent from a recognized board.
- Physics, chemistry, and mathematics as the required subjects.
- At least 60% average marks in PCM.
- At least 50% marks in English in either Class 10 or Class 12.
IMU’s official DNS program page also specifies 60% in PCM and 50% in English at the 10+2 level.
Students from recognized boards other than CBSE or state boards can also apply, provided their qualifications meet the applicable equivalence and eligibility requirements.
Is PCM compulsory for DNS?
Yes. For the standard 10+2 route, physics, chemistry, and mathematics are required subjects.
This makes DNS different from many general diploma programs where students from several streams may be eligible. A student who has completed Class 12 without mathematics or physics should not assume that the DNS eligibility criteria will be satisfied.
Minimum PCM Marks for DNS
The minimum requirement is 60% average marks in PCM. This means the calculation is based on physics, chemistry, and mathematics together rather than requiring 60% separately in each of the three subjects.
For example, a candidate could have different marks in physics, chemistry, and mathematics while still meeting the 60% PCM average if the combined average reaches the required percentage.
SC/ST Relaxation
IMU provides a 5% relaxation in the PCM eligibility marks for SC/ST candidates. The relaxation does not apply to the English requirement.
English Eligibility for DNS
English is another important requirement. Candidates need a minimum of 50% marks in English in Class 10 or Class 12, according to the applicable admission criteria. This requirement is separate from the PCM percentage.
For example, a candidate with an excellent PCM average can still fail to meet the DNS eligibility requirement if the required English marks are not achieved.

Age Limit for DNS
Age is another major eligibility condition. For the 2026–27 admission cycle, IMU’s marine program eligibility framework uses the following maximum ages:
Category | Male | Female |
General | 25 years | 27 years |
OBC (NCL) | 28 years | 30 years |
SC/ST | 30 years | 32 years |
The age is calculated with reference to the commencement of the academic session, which for the 2026–27 admission cycle is 1 August 2026.
Students should always calculate their age using the date specified in the prospectus rather than using the date of application.
Is There a Minimum Age for DNS?
The candidates need to fulfill the respective age criteria for joining the marine course. The IMU’s course information states that the DNS is a course after Class 12, and the respective age criteria have to be matched with the prospectus of the respective batch.
In case of a candidate who is very near to the age criteria, then the reference age will be the one stated in the admission notification.
Is IMU-CET Mandatory for DNS?
Yes. As per the IMU website, admission to the B.Sc. Nautical Science and DNS takes place based on the IMU-CET, and the exam is compulsory.
For the 2026 intake, the IMU has conducted the Common Entrance Test in the computer-based mode.
According to the notification issued by the university regarding admission, the IMU-CET 2026 rank is applicable for the February 2027 DNS intake; hence, there is no separate CET for this February intake. Those who wanted admission in the February 2027 DNS intake had to apply for the IMU-CET 2026.
Considering the IMU-CET 2026 has been conducted, one should look for the future official admission notification from IMU rather than the old examination dates.
Is Sponsorship Required for DNS?
It all depends upon the place where the student’s admission is taking place. IMU has clearly mentioned that sponsorship is not necessary for courses on IMU campuses, but it is a necessity in case of admission into the DNS course at IMU-affiliated institutions.
In the academic year 2026-27, IMU has issued a particular circular related to admission to DNS in affiliated colleges for sponsored students.
This is an important aspect for DNS aspirants since passing IMU-CET will not ensure sponsored admission to a DNS-affiliated institution. It is also necessary to meet the selection criteria of the sponsoring company.
What Is DNS Sponsorship?
Sponsorship is essentially a company’s commitment to take a candidate through its sponsored training/admission route.
Companies can have their own selection processes, which may include:
- Written examination
- Aptitude assessment
- Interview
- Psychometric assessment
- Medical examination
- Document verification
The exact process varies between companies. IMU’s affiliated-institute requirements also make it clear that institutes must have appropriate sponsorship arrangements for their DNS intake.
Medical Fitness Requirements for DNS
Academic eligibility forms just one part of DNS admissions. A candidate should also be medically eligible as per the criteria that have been set out by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping).
It has been made mandatory for IMU candidates applying to marine courses, including DNS, to adhere to the physical fitness, eyesight, and hearing standards as well.
That is why it is advisable for students to get themselves medically checked before investing any amount in the admission process.
DNS Eyesight Requirements
Eyesight requirements are particularly important for students planning a deck-side career.
The applicable standards include requirements relating to the following:
- Distance vision
- Binocular vision
- Field of vision
- Eye movement
- Color vision
According to the IMU prospectus for 2026-27, candidates for DNS must possess adequate binocular vision and proper color vision as determined by the Ishihara test. The unaided distance visual standard is 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other eye. (IMU)
Maritime medicine may involve elaborate criteria, and therefore students are advised to seek advice from an approved medical officer at DG Shipping.
Merchant Navy Decoded App for Aspirants
The Merchant Navy Decoded App is another useful resource for students preparing for the Merchant Navy admission pathway.
The app provides Merchant Navy-related information and preparation resources, including an IMU-CET test series. Regular mock-test practice can help students improve speed and identify weak areas before the examination. Students can combine this with sponsorship-focused preparation and interview practice for a more complete preparation strategy.
Is color blindness allowed in DNS?
Normal color vision is required for DNS.
IMU’s medical requirements specify testing of color vision through the Ishihara test. Students who have concerns about color vision should undergo an appropriate maritime medical examination before proceeding with admission.
Is a passport required for DNS?
IMU strongly recommends that candidates joining marine programs, including DNS, have a passport or at least apply for one at the time of admission.
Although the passport is not listed as a basic academic eligibility condition, getting one early can make the later documentation process easier.
The name on the passport should also match the candidate’s academic documents.
Is Marital Status Important for DNS?
Yes.
The eligibility conditions for the marine programs specify that candidates must be unmarried.
This condition should be checked in the prospectus applicable to the admission year.
Can You Do DNS After Class 10?
No, not through the standard DNS admission route.
DNS is a post-Class 12 program. The standard eligibility requires 10+2/equivalent with physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
A student who has completed only Class 10 needs to complete Class 12 with the required subjects before applying for DNS.
Can PCB Students Apply for DNS?
No, not through the standard 10+2 eligibility route.
DNS requires physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Mathematics is therefore an essential subject.
Students studying PCB without mathematics should look at courses whose eligibility requirements match their subjects instead of assuming that DNS will be available to them.
Can Students from Any Board Apply?
Students from recognized boards can apply if their Class 12 qualification meets the prescribed eligibility requirements.
The important factors are not simply the board name but whether the qualification is recognized/equivalent and whether the candidate has the required PCM and English marks.
DNS Eligibility for SC/ST Candidates
SC/ST candidates receive a 5% relaxation in the PCM eligibility requirement.
However, the English requirement remains unchanged.
Candidates claiming relaxation should have the appropriate category documentation available during the admission and verification process.
DNS Eligibility for OBC Candidates
OBC candidates need to satisfy the applicable academic requirements.
The age limit provides a higher maximum age for OBC (NCL) candidates compared with the General category. For the 2026–27 framework, the maximum age is 28 years for male OBC (NCL) candidates and 30 years for female OBC (NCL) candidates.
The candidate must satisfy the conditions for OBC (NCL) status where such status is being claimed.
DNS Eligibility for Female Candidates
Female candidates can apply for DNS if they meet the academic, age, medical, and other applicable requirements.
The age limits are different from those applicable to male candidates. For 2026–27, IMU lists a maximum age of 27 years for general-category female candidates, 30 years for OBC (NCL), and 32 years for SC/ST candidates.
The availability of seats can vary between institutes and batches, so candidates should check the institute-specific admission notification as well.
DNS Eligibility: Documents Required
During admission and certificate verification, students may be asked to provide documents such as
- Class 10 certificate/marksheet
- Class 12 marksheet/certificate
- Proof of date of birth
- English marks proof
- IMU-CET rank certificate
- Category certificate, where applicable
- Medical fitness certificate
- Passport or passport application details
- Sponsorship documents for affiliated-institute DNS admission
- Other documents specified by IMU or the institute
The exact document list can differ according to the admission route.
