B.Sc. Nautical Science Eligibility Criteria

Selecting a career in the Merchant Navy is a major decision, and for those students who want to join the deck department of a ship, B.Sc. in Nautical Science is definitely one course to consider. However, before you choose a college and apply for admission, it is very crucial to be aware of whether you are eligible or not. There are many questions regarding the minimum PCM percentage, English marks, age, vision, and the entrance exam. The first thing to do is to understand all the criteria, and missing any single important criterion can ruin your plans of admission.

Thus, here are the B.Sc. Nautical Science eligibility criteria in easy language from the official IMU admission information released for the 2026-27 session.

What Is B.Sc. Nautical Science?

The B.Sc. Nautical Science is an academic course for three years for students that want to have knowledge in navigation and operating merchant ships. It includes such subjects as navigation, seamanship, operations of a ship, and maritime safety.

It provides a way for students that want to create a career in a deck officer position. Nevertheless, a degree itself does not guarantee any job or certain rank on the ship. The candidate has to pass all the necessary tests, sea service, examinations, and other required things.

Moreover, a B.Sc. in Nautical Science should not be mistaken for a Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS). Both programs are connected with the nautical or deck part of the Merchant Navy; however, the program of the course and admission procedure is different.

Educational Qualification for B.Sc. Nautical Science

First and foremost, the candidate needs to have completed his/her 12th class education. The candidates need to have cleared 10+2 or its equivalent with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) according to the IMU 2026-27 prospectus.

It means that those candidates who wish to get admission to a B.Sc. in Nautical Science using this mode need to have completed all three subjects in their qualifying examination. Simply having completed 12th class would not suffice.

Can a commerce or arts student apply?

As per the prospectus of IMU 2026-27, the regular 10+2 eligibility is for BSc Nautical Science, and the student has to possess physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Hence, a student who has completed class 12 in the commerce or arts stream but does not have the mandatory PCM subjects will not qualify for this course.

One must ensure that one does not presume oneself to be eligible just because he/she has opted for a change in stream or additional qualification. Only pay for the course application/registration if you are sure of its acceptability as per the prospectus.

Minimum PCM Percentage Required

One of the most important parts of B.Sc. Nautical Science eligibility is the minimum aggregate percentage in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. For the 2026–27 intake, IMU specified a minimum average of 60% in PCM.

Is there a PCM relaxation for SC/ST candidates?

Yeah. The IMU 2026-27 prospectus has lowered the PCM qualification marks by 5% for SC/ST candidates. This relaxation is to the extent of PCM qualification marks only and shall not be taken as relaxation in other eligibility criteria. As per the prospectus, relaxation does not apply to the qualifying marks in English. There is also some relaxation in English for those candidates from the Scheduled Tribes, who are natives of Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, as per the conditions stated in the prospectus.

Those who wish to relax should go through the actual wordings in the prospectus. Remember, if you belong to a category, then don’t assume that you will have relaxation.

Minimum English Marks Required

English is yet another subject which is mandatory. In the year 2026-27 intake, IMU used to make it necessary for the applicants to have at least 50 percent marks in English in Class 10 or Class 12. This implies that one may take any of these two examinations in order to qualify for eligibility in English, provided he/she has the requisite qualifying English marks, according to the admission criteria. A high PCM average does not negate the requirement.

For example, a student securing 70 percent marks in physics, chemistry, and mathematics but 45 percent in English in classes 10 and 12 would not qualify for the 2026-27 English eligibility criterion.

Is IMU-CET Compulsory for B.Sc. Nautical Science?

Yes. According to the admission policy for 2026-27, a good IMU-CET ranking will be mandatory for a B.Sc. in Nautical Science. IMU CET stands for Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test. It is one of the most important steps towards admission, and candidates need to refer to the latest exam notification for the registration process, syllabus, exam schedule, and admission procedures.

Even if you have fulfilled the academic eligibility criteria, it does not guarantee admission.

How should you prepare for IMU-CET?

Preparation is easier to manage when you combine concept revision with regular practice. Students can begin by strengthening physics, chemistry, and mathematics while also preparing the other sections specified in the official examination syllabus.

For structured preparation, students may explore JMDI Academy’s IMU CET preparation program. Its preparation resources include the Crack IMUCET Book, which contains 6,000+ MCQs, concise chapter-wise theory, detailed solutions, and five sample test papers.

B.Sc. Nautical Science Age Limit

Age is another condition that candidates must check carefully. Under the IMU 2026–27 prospectus, the maximum age limit varies by gender and category.

OBC

The age reference date for the 2026–27 admission cycle was 1 August 2026, the opening date specified for the academic session in the prospectus. These are maximum ages, not an indication that every candidate in the age group is automatically eligible. The educational qualifications, medical fitness, entrance examination, and other such conditions still matter.

Marital Status Requirement

According to IMU 2026-27 B.Sc. Nautical Science admission requirements, the candidate must be unmarried. Age and fitness in addition to any academic achievement. The requirement regarding marital status must be fulfilled, while PCM/English marks after 10th class have no significance.

The candidates need to refer to the relevant prospectus and application form for the purpose of declaration/documentation.

Medical Fitness for B.Sc. Nautical Science

Fitness in terms of good health is particularly critical for candidates seeking admission to the nautical course owing to the nature of duties involved, such as navigation and safety concerns, along with working in challenging conditions.

The candidates must be fit in terms of their health as per the Merchant Shipping medical fitness guidelines applicable under the IMU prospectus 2026-27. The prospectus gives specifications regarding eye and hearing and also demands a fitness certificate of the candidate signed by a DGS-approved doctor. Do not rely on your general health check-up. The candidate will have to determine his/her fitness in accordance with the relevant requirements and have himself/herself medically checked by a DGS-approved doctor.

9.1 Eyesight requirements

For the nautical or deck department, the DGS pre-sea eyesight standard specifies unaided distance vision of:

  • 6/6 in the better eye
  • 6/9 in the other eye

The standard also states that there must be ‘no relevant morbid condition of the eyes or eyelids likely to be aggravated or recur.’ These are the benchmarks for normal vision. The standard may be met with the use of spectacles or contact lenses, but this does not automatically meet the requirement for this course.

9.2 Color vision requirements

Candidates should have normal color vision by the Ishihara test chart as per applicable pre-sea medical standards. Color vision is important in nautical work, as seafarers may need to identify navigation lights and other color-coded visual signals. A candidate should not determine their own eligibility on the basis of an online test or a normal eye test. The necessary assessment should be made by the appropriate approved medical procedure.
