Age Limit In Merchant Navy

Merchant Navy is a profession that is a dream for many bright-eyed young guys/girls coming from middle-class families. All of them want to join this field so that one day they can earn high lucrative salaries and raise the living standards of themselves and their families. However, a large majority of people in our country are still not aware of the maritime industry and its requirements. Due to this many deserving candidates miss out on the opportunity of joining this field. One of the major reasons for candidates missing out on the opportunity to join the merchant navy is the age limit. In this blog, we will give you an overview of the different age limit criteria for various courses in the Merchant navy. 

Merchant Navy Age Limit for Diploma in Nautical Science

Diploma in Nautical. Science is a one-year pre-sea course to become a deck officer in the Merchant navy. Candidates are required to complete a minimum sea time of 18 months as a deck cadet upon successful completion of this course. After completing 18 months of sea time they are eligible to appear for the 2nd Mate’s Certificate of the Competency exam. Upon clearing these exams they can join a ship as a junior officer. 

AGE LIMIT 

The maximum age is 25 years, and the minimum age is 17 years on the date of commencement of the course. A relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 2 years for women candidates.

Merchant Navy Age Limit for BSc in Nautical Science

BSc in Nautical Science is a 3 years degree course in order to become a deck officer in the merchant navy. After successfully completing this course and getting placed in a good shipping company, candidates have to complete a minimum sea time of 12 months. After completing 12 months of sea time they become eligible to appear for the 2nd Mate’s Certificate of Competency exams. 

AGE LIMIT

The maximum age is 21 years and the minimum age is 17 years on the date of commencement of the course. A relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 2 years for women candidates.

Merchant Navy Age Limit for Btech in Marine Engineering

Btech in Marine Engineering is a 4 years degree course that acts as a stepping stone to becoming a marine engineer officer in the merchant navy. The syllabus includes subjects like- Applied Thermodynamics, Ship Structure & Construction, Naval Architecture, Fluids Mechanics, Marine Heat Engine & Air Conditioning, etc. After completing this 4 years course candidates have to complete a sea time of 6 months onboard a ship. After completing this required sea time they become eligible to appear for the Class IV MEO exams. Upon successfully clearing the MEO Class IV exams they can join a vessel as a junior engineer officer. 

AGE LIMIT 

Merchant Navy Age Limit for Graduate Marine Engineering

Graduate Marine Engineering is a 1 year PG diploma course that consists of 2 semesters. It gives an opportunity to those candidates who have completed their Bachelor in engineering in mechanical engineering or naval architecture. After completing this course the candidates are required to complete a sea time training of 6 months. After completing this period they are eligible to appear for the Class IV MEO exams. After clearing these exams they get the Certificate of Competency (CoC) from the Mercantile Marine Department of the Government of India and are promoted to the rank of 4th Engineer officer. 

AGE LIMIT

The age of the Candidate must not be more than 28 years on the day of the start of Training.

Merchant Navy Age Limit for Diploma in Marine Engineering

A diploma in Marine Engineering is a 2-years residential course to become a marine engineer in the merchant navy. This course gives an opportunity to candidates who possess a Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Naval architecture to join the merchant navy as a marine engineer. 

AGE LIMIT

He/she should not exceed a maximum age of 28 years

Merchant Navy Age Limit for Electro-Technical Officer

The Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is a licensed member of the engine department of a ship. They are responsible for the efficient functioning of every electronic piece of equipment present onboard a merchant’s vessel. For achieving the certificate as Electro-Technical Officer (ETO), pre-sea Training for ETO on merchant ships of duration of 17 weeks is mandatory along with 8 months of onboard training.

AGE LIMIT

For general category candidates, the maximum age is 30 years. For Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, the maximum age relaxation of 5 years is applicable, a maximum of 3 years relaxation applies to OBC (NCL) candidates, and 2 years for female candidates as per the directives of the Government of India.
